Read in four passes

1 · Find the tuğra

The calligraphic emblem identifies the ruler. Compare the whole design and letters; its silhouette alone is insufficient.

2 · Find the mint phrase

Look for “struck in” and the place name. Names vary in spelling and can be partly off the flan.

3 · Record both numbers

Copy the large date and separate regnal numeral before converting anything. Some types use a different date convention.

4 · Confirm the denomination

Do not confuse para and kuruş. Check inscriptions, weight, diameter and catalogue type together.

The numeral chart

Words run right to left. A multi-digit numeral is read as a number in its normal digit order: ١٢٩٣ = 1293, not 3921. Coins may use variant numeral shapes.

Late Ottoman accession-date desk

An accession date narrows the search; it does not always identify the ruler alone. Murad V and Abdülhamid II both use AH 1293. Their tuğras must be distinguished.

Two documented readings

ASHMOLEAN HCR17846

١٢٥٥ · سنة ١٦ · مصر

Read 1255, year 16, Misr. The museum attributes this copper 5 para to Abdülmecid and dates it 1853–1854. The large 1255 is not a complete strike date by itself.

ASHMOLEAN HCR17947

١٢٩٣ · سنة ٤

Read 1293 and year 4. The museum identifies Abdülhamid II, Constantinople, copper 5 para, and dates the piece AH 1296 / 1878–1879. Ruler and mint complete the attribution.

When the simple year rule stops helping

For an issue that counts regnal years in the expected way, accession AH + regnal year − 1 is a useful research starting point. It is not a universal date rule for every Ottoman coin or banknote. Rumi dates, frozen dates, later restrikes and catalogue conventions need separate treatment. Preserve the original numerals and cite an issue-specific attribution before stating a Gregorian strike year.

How do I read the two dates on an Ottoman coin?

Read the main accession date together with the separate regnal numeral, then confirm the ruler and the issue-specific date convention.
