An examination sequence
Identify the exact type first. Measure with a calibrated scale and caliper; compare edge construction, relief, lettering and metal with documented examples. Casting seams, repeated surface defects or implausible measurements warrant further review. Genuine hammered coins can have irregular flans and weak strikes. No single visual test proves authenticity.
Wear versus problems
Separate wear from strike weakness, corrosion, clipping, mounting, tooling and cleaning. An attractive photograph can conceal hairlines or smoothing. Ask for neutral-light photographs and an edge view. Record uncertainty before paying a premium for a numerical grade or rare variety.
Storage and documentation
Handle coins by the edge and banknotes with clean, dry hands. Use inert holders intended for numismatic storage. Do not polish coins, erase notes or apply household chemicals. Keep old envelopes and collection tickets with the item; these may preserve attribution and ownership history that cannot be reconstructed later.
